James John Sperfslage, 91, of Earlville, Iowa, died Monday, March 5, 2018. Visitation: 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Earlville, with a 7:00 p.m. Scripture Service. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2018, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Earlville, with additional visitation from 9:30 - 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial: St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Earlville.
Jim was born May 2, 1926, at Dyersville, Iowa, the son of George and Mary (Ploesl) Sperfslage. He attended school in Earlville. Jim served in the U.S. Army Infantry from February 1945 – December 1946. Duty sent him to twenty different bases – from Minnesota, Missouri, Texas, Kansas, Oregon, California, Hawaii, Virginia, and Louisiana in the States to the Philippines and Panama Canal.
On June 1, 1948, James married Faye L. Kauffman at Immaculate Conception Church in Sand Springs. They farmed at rural Edgewood for a year, and then settled on a farm north of Earlville. Together they farmed for forty years until retiring at Earlville in 1991.
Jim was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Earlville. He was especially proud of his time as a 70 year member of the Carpenter – Diesch – White American Legion Post #436.
Jim and Faye’s children are Philip Sperfslage, Kaye (Ted) Wall, Mark (Joellen) Sperfslage, and Paul (Ann) Sperfslage. Grandchildren include Cari (Ramon) Redondo, Nicole (Joe) Munson, Steven (Staci) Sperfslage and Kristin Sperfslage; and great-grandchildren, Ray Redondo, Aubrey and Nathan Munson, Skyla Sperfslage; step-grandchildren, Troy (Tracey) Eickstaedt, Alicia (Shawn) Kimball, and Megan (Chris) Osborne; step-great-grandchildren, Haley and Dominique Eickstaedt, and Hadley Osborne. Also surviving is a brother, Herbert (Theresia) Sperfslage; brothers and sisters-in-law, Avalo Berns, Russell (Betty) Kauffman, Mary Kauffman, Bob Auman; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Jim in death was his wife, Faye (December 28, 2017); children, Steven, and a child in infancy; siblings and spouses, Robert (Helen) Sperfslage, and Lucille Berns; in-laws and spouses, Lowell (Madonna) Kauffman, Marjorie (Ray) McDowell, Annola (Al) Keegan, Cyril Kauffman, Warren (Fonda) Kauffman, Clark (Dolly) Kauffman, George Kauffman, and June Auman; and daughter-in-law, Dianne Sperfslage;
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to American Legion Post #436, RMC Home Care and Hospice, the Good Neighbor Home, or St. Joseph Catholic Church, Earlville.
