James W. Sliger, 76, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, December 1, 2012, at Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Services: 10 a.m. Saturday, December 8, 2012 at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Cedar Rapids. Family will greet friends from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, December 7, 2012, at the funeral home. Burial Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; daughter, Kammie Sliger of Cedar Rapids; son, Chris Sliger (Sally) of Mead, Colorado; step son, Charlie Zeman (Julie) of Salt Lake City, Utah; step daughters, Dena (Brannen) Bourgeois and Ginny (Larry) Scott, both of Cedar Rapids; and sister Joyce L (Sliger) Summers, Springfield, Missouri. He had 13 grandchildren; Dustin, Matthew, Michael, Allison, Laura, Christian, Cody, Trevor, Kenzie, Peyton, Dylan, Noah, and Joe; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Tasha.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
James W Sliger Jr, son of James W Sliger Sr and Clara H (Curley) Sliger was born November 25, 1936 in Burlington Iowa. He attended Burlington High School, graduating in June, 1954. Jim was a Cedar Rapids police officer for many years until his retirement in 1991. During his last years on the department he served as “Officer Friendly’” and educated elementary children about safety issues. The final 18 years of his professional career was working with the Federal Marshals.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given in Jim’s name to the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, 315 18th Avenue, Hiawatha, Iowa.
