James Edward Jantzen, 49, of Solon, died Friday, May 16, 2008, at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha, following a lengthy illness. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at the Shueyville United Methodist Church, by the Rev. Sheryll Untiedt. The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2008, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids and from 9 to 10 a.m. at the church on Wednesday. Burial: Sheridan Cemetery, Malcom.
Survivors include his wife Lori; his sons, Matthew and John, at home; his mother, Ellen Jantzen of Grinnell; a brother, Kenneth Jantzen of Malcom; two sisters, Peggy Jantzen and Pauline Sharp, both of Grinnell; and a nephew, Dennis Jantzen of Mount Pleasant.
He was preceded in death by his father, Clifford.
James was born October 2, 1958, the son of Clifford and Ellen (Irwin) Jantzen, in Grinnell, Iowa. A 1977 Grinnell High School graduate, he furthered his education at Iowa State University where he graduated in 1981 with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. He later obtained his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Iowa. James began working in 1982 at Texas Instruments in Dallas, Texas. In 1985, he began working at Rockwell Collins where he was an Engineering Manager in the Advanced Technology Center. On November 15, 1986, he was united in marriage to Lori Garton in Des Moines, Iowa. An avid basketball player and Iowa State University sports fan, James also coached the “Twisters” A.A.U. youth basketball teams. He was a lifetime member of the Iowa State University Alumni Association.
