James F. "Fred? Claflin, 85, of 1346 Highwood Dr. NW, Cedar Rapids, died, Monday, August 7, 2006, at West Ridge Care Center, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Services: 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 11, 2006, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. The family will greet friends from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, August 10, 2006, at the funeral home. Burial: Fairfax Cemetery, Fairfax.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Florence; two sons, James (Ruth) Claflin of West Hills, California, and John (Sandra) Claflin of Lexington, Kentucky; two grandchildren, Sheri (Jamie) Claflin/Forsyth of Woodland Hills, California, and Carey (Jamie) Buresh of Cedar Rapids; and a sister-in-law, Jean Claflin of Cedar Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Bruce.

Fred was born June 11, 1921, the son of James L. and Minnie (Broking) Claflin in Mason City, Iowa. He served with the United States Marine Corps, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Pioneer Battalion. Fred served from 1942 to 1945 during World War II and was in the first wave into Guam and Bougainville. On January 10, 1947, he was united in marriage to Florence Cope at the Little Brown Church in Nashau, Iowa. Fred was employed by Concrete Materials and retired from Martin Marrietta, after 42 years as director of purchasing.
