James H. Ewing, 82, a resident of Hiawatha Care Center, died Thursday, March 18, 2004, in Mercy Medical Center, following a long illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 22, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Brian Milford. Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
James is survived by his devoted wife, Arline, whom he adored throughout their sixty-four year marriage. His "girls?, Nancy Aossey (Albert) and Lynn Tichy were the light of his life as were his grandchildren, Sherry Shaheen (Kamal), Terry Aossey, Amy Aossey , Darren Tichy and Courtney Packingham (Kurt) and great-grandchildren, Gibran, Shadiyah and Nahdia Shaheen, Jameil and Raja Aossey, Danyah Aossey, Logan and Tailyn Tichy, and Kohl, Dane and Garet Packingham.
He is also survived by his younger sister, Lillian (J.C.) Batla; and a sister-in-law, Kay Ewing.
James was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Melvin Ewing; and his beloved grandson, Terry Aossey.
James was born May 23, 1921, in Decorah, Iowa. the son of Melvin and Hattie Ewing. Through the years his work would take him to many exciting parts of our country. He not only participated in the construction of the historic Alaskan highway, but also the famous Ft. Randall dam in South Dakota. He also worked in the shipyards along the California coastline and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army. He was the most proud of his thirty-four years of dedicated employment at FMC Corporation in Cedar Rapids. He served as deacon and then elder at Olivet Presbyterian Church for several years.
We will miss our Jim, our dad, our grandpa. He was the strength of our family, the joy in our hearts, the inspiration for our futures.
