Jim was born on July 8, 1939, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of Robert and Lucille (Walters) Beck. He was a 1957 graduate of Marquette University High School in Milwaukee and went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Air Force. On June 20, 1964, Jim was united in marriage to Susan Jean Plaisance in Milwaukee. He worked for Rockwell Collins for over 30 years, before his retirement in 1996.
Jim was a very faithful man, who found great joy serving as a Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, where he would visit the homebound and tutored grade school students at St. Joseph Catholic School. He also ministered Christ to prisoners in Anamosa. He was a former member of Immaculate Conception in Cedar Rapids, Indian Creek Country Club, and the American Legion Post 298. Jim made an impact on everyone he met, and he enjoyed volunteering his time to many organizations and was nominated and won the KCRG 9 Who Care Award. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Green Bay Packers fan. Jim also loved swimming, spending time at the cabin with his family, but his greatest joy was spending time with family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him, including his close friends of Bill W.
Jim is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 60 years, Susan Beck; five children, Joan Middleton of Leander, Texas, James M. (Carrie) Beck of Urbandale, Iowa, Christine (James) Fulton of Springfield, Missouri, Katherine (Rod) Nevar of Chardon, Ohio, and Paul (Allison) Beck of Gaithersburg, Maryland; and thirteen grandchildren, Brittany, Phillip, and Autumn Middleton, Sarah, Alyssa, James M. II, and Karley Beck, Jonathan and Joshua Hitt, Michael, Raquel, Eve, and Sean Nevar.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lucille Beck; brothers, Robert, William “Billy”, and Martin Beck; and sister, Barbara Nelson.
