James Nicholas Allans, 86, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died July 31, 2013, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services: 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 5, 2013, at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church, Cedar Rapids, conducted by Rev. Fr. Peter Andronache. Family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, August 4, 2013, at the church, with a Trisagion service at 7 p.m. Burial: Linwood Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military rites by American Legion Post #298. Arrangements by Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Dessie Allans of Cedar Rapids; daughters, Dorothea Allans of Cedar Rapids and Francine Allans (Douglas Roloff) of Boise, Idaho; and a grandson, James Roloff.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother; and one sister.
Jim was born on May 17, 1927, in Chicago, IL, son of Nicholas and Frances (Christakacos) Allans. Jim Allans was an Expedition Leader and member of the Rotary Club of Wilmette, IL; the director of the Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps and American Red Cross-Disaster Service. He was the owner and CEO of Kashian Brothers Inc. Wilmette, IL; past president and a founder of Saints Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Glenview, IL. Jim served as a tech sergeant for the Third US Army; 4th Armored Division under General Patton; and 11th armored Calvary Regiment.
He was a loving husband of Dessie Allans; caring father of Dorothea and Francine Allans; father-in-law of Douglas Roloff; and proud Papou of James as well as his four legged grandchildren, Abby, Sunshine and Bella.
