Jack Warren Carley, 90, of Marion, formerly of Central City, passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2019, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. In agreement with Jack’s wishes, cremation has taken place. The family will greet friends from 10 – 11 a.m. on Friday, January 11, 2019, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City. A Memorial Service will follow at 11 a.m. on Friday, at the funeral home conducted by Reverend Josh Hansen. Burial will take place at Mt. Clark Cemetery, Central City, at a later date.
Jack was born January 1, 1929, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Eli East and Faye Varguson. He graduated from Omaha High School in 1947 and went on to serve in the United States Navy. On June 9, 1949, in Central City, Jack was united in marriage to Norma Jean Johnson. He was employed at Iowa Manufacturing as a machinist and then retired from Cedar Rapids, Inc. after nearly 40 years as a Senior Purchasing Agent. Jack was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Central City and loved the Book of the Revelation. He was very artistic and creative in paintings, drawings, carvings, and woodwork. Jack was a member of the Central City Fire Department and was the Assistant Fire Chief for 22 years. He also served as President of the Central City School Board.
He is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of nearly 70 years, Norma Jean Carley of Marion; son, Patrick Carley of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Julie Ann (Jim Alberts) Carley of Cedar Rapids; one granddaughter, Katherine (Scott) Williams of Chicago, Illinois; three great-grandchildren, Lydia, Emmett, and Jack; and several nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and two sisters.
Memorials may be directed in Jack’s memory to a favorite charity of the donor’s choice.
