Gene J. Haferbecker, 75, of 2318 Hoosier St. SW, Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, November 13, 2003, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Memorial Services:
4:30 p.m. Sunday, November 16, at The Cedar Valley Kingdom Hall of Jehovah?s Witnesses, 1700 Naoma Dr. SW, Cedar Rapids, by Dale Foust. Arrangements with Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; his children, Stephen (Debra) of Brooklyn, New York, Mitch of Cedar Rapids, Russell of Chicago, Illinois, and Crystal of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Eunice Chitwood, of Madison, Wisconsin.
Also surviving are three nieces; and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert; and a sister, Virginia.
Gene was born October 5, 1928, the son of Reuben and Edith (Nank) Haferbecker, in Dubuque, Iowa. On July 6, 1965, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Arnett, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was baptized July 5, 1941, as one of Jehovah?s Witnesses, served at the World Headquarters in New York from 1950 to 1953, and has served faithfully for many years as an elder in the congregations in Cedar Rapids. For over 30 years, Gene worked as a machinist at Iowa Manufacturing, Goss, and Universal Engineering, retiring in 1981. He was a retired member of the International Association of Machinists and Areospace Workers Local 831. Gene will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
