Ivanelle "Nellie? A. Steffen, 79, of Earlville, Iowa, died Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester following a lengthy illness.

Funeral Mass will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 13, 2006 at St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Earlville by Rev. Herbert Tegeler. Family will greet friends from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, with a scripture service at 4:00 p.m., and after 9:00 a.m. Friday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville. Burial will be in St. Joseph?s Catholic Cemetery, Earlville.

Nellie was born on September 21, 1927, in Petersburg, the daughter of John and Melaina (Bruggeman) Knipper. She attended school in Petersburg and was domestic help for area families. On August 30, 1948 Nellie was united in marriage to Richard N. Steffen at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Petersburg. The couple lived in Dyersville, Holy Cross and Ryan before settling on their farm north of Earlville in March of 1951. They operated their dairy farm until 1975 when they retired and moved into Earlville.

Nellie was a member of St. Joseph?s Catholic Church in Earlville where she belonged to the Guild. She belonged to the ladies? Almoral Club in Earlville and volunteered as a reading helper at St. Joseph?s School. Nellie enjoyed cooking, baking, quilting, playing cards and pie-making for the Lord?s Acre Day. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grand and great-grandchildren.

Nellie is survived by her husband, Richard N. Steffen of Earlville; four children, Becky (Merlin) Demmer of Farley, Mike (Donna) Steffen of Earlville, Trudy (Mike) Nurre of Dyersville and Sallie (Dennis) Hunt of Epworth; sisters, Anita Wulfekuhle of Holy Cross, Donna (Jerry) Manternach of Manchester and Gladys (Harold) Heyer of Merced, CA; brothers, Virgil (Gladys) Knipper and Paul (Delaine) Knipper, both of Dyersville; a son-in-law Leo Wegmann of Delhi; 20 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Nellie was preceded in death by her parents; John & Melaina Knipper; a daughter, Karen Kay Wegmann in 1999; grandson, Carl Demmer in 1976; and a brother-in-law, Albin Wulfekuhle.
