Irene K. Leighton, 103, of Manchester, Iowa, died Tuesday morning, January 21, 2003, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester.

A Funeral Mass will be held 11:30 am Friday, January 24, 2003 at St. Mary?s Catholic Church, Manchester, with the Rev. Dennis Miller officiating. Friends may call at the Church one hour prior to the service on Friday. Burial will be in the St. Mary?s Catholic Cemetery, Manchester. Arrangements by Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester, Iowa.

Irene was born on December 2, 1899, near Balltown, Iowa, the daughter of Edward Jake & Kathryn (Duroucher) Gartner. After graduating from Balltown High School, she helped on her parents? farm. In 1921, Irene was united in marriage to Everett Leighton at the Catholic Rectory in Manchester. The couple made their home in Manchester. Irene worked as a seamstress in a local dress shop later opening her own business in her home. Everett died in 1965 and Irene continued to live in their home until moving in with her daughter, Kathleen Reed. After her daughter?s death in 1994, Irene moved to the senior living center until she broke her hip and moved into the Good Neighbor Home.

Irene is survived by her son and his wife, Robert E. & Jo Leighton of Des Moines, Iowa; nine grandchildren; twenty-six great-grandchildren; and twelve great-great-grandchildren; and one son-in-law, Francis Reed, of Manchester, Iowa.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; Jake & Kathryn Gartner; her husband, Everett Leighton; a daughter, Kathleen Reed; a great-great grandson, Joseph Mesch; a sister, Bernice F. Neuman; and a brother, Edward J. Gartner.
