Irene Lillian Fay (Nelson)

Irene Lillian Fay, 76, of Hiawatha, passed away Saturday, December 10, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 16, 2011, at Hope United Church of Christ, Hiawatha, by Rev. Dr. Sue Weier. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 15, 2011, at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Marion and 1 hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Burial: Troy Mills Cemetery, Troy Mills.
Survivors include her daughter, Christiane (Serdar) Tas of Irvine, CA; son, Kevin Fay of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Amanda Fay, Brittany Fay, Jaxon Collins, and Hayden Fay; and two great-grandchildren, Chaunteya and Urijah. She is also survived by her sisters, Norma (Dean) Stimson and Grace Moyer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one brother, Virgil Nelson.
Irene was born December 14, 1934, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Vernon and Lila (Sauer) Nelson. She graduated from Marion High School. Irene married Vernon Fay on August 1, 1955. Vernon passed away on October 29, 2008. Irene worked for Collins Radio for 10 years, and retired from Cedar Rapids School’s food service after 20 years. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, and bowling, and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Irene also enjoyed many church activities and volunteered for Greensquare Meals and Road to Recovery.
