Irene Lamey Mary Cummings

Irene Lamey Mary (Hogan) Cummings, 92, suffered a fall and later died at Gundersen Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin on October 21, 2017. Visitation: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 26, 2017, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manchester, Iowa, with Funeral Mass beginning at 11:00 a.m., conducted by Rev. Joseph Schneider. Burial: St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, Greeley. Arrangements with Clifton - Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Earlville.
She was born to James F. Hogan and Martha (Lamey) Hogan in Castle Grove, Iowa on July 12, 1925. Following the death of her husband, Irene had lived in the homes of her three daughters in Wisconsin since 2001, but always retained her deep attachment to Iowa. She began her schooling in the country school house across the road from her farm home and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Monticello, IA. She came from a long line of Mercy Nurses (mother, aunts and cousins), and after having worked as a nurse in Dubuque, IA and an instructor in Clinton, IA, as a farm wife/mother, she shared her medical acumen and love with many neighbors and any injured farm animal or pet. She was a humble anchor in her community, serving for four decades as a volunteer choir director/organist at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Greeley, Iowa; catechist; family historian; poll worker; volunteer school band supporter; gardener; and a life-long promoter of life and the Natural Law, as evidenced in her works of poetry and prose.
Of all for which Irene Cummings will long be remembered, it will be how well she personified the meaning of her name. Irene means "peace," and that is how she lived her life, as a peace-maker.
Irene is survived by her 8 children and their families: Roger T. and Sharon (Ogden) Cummings of Cashton, Wisconsin; Terese (Pat) Slattery of Rockland, Wisconsin; Cecile (Kurt) Gregory of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; David Cummings of Sparta, Wisconsin; Joe and Donna (Cohen) Cummings of Overland Park, Kansas; Mark and Sue (Walker) Cummings of Cashton, Wisconsin; Tom and Cheryl (Wolf) Cummings of Cashton, Wisconsin; Mary (Bill) Turner of Gays Mills, Wisconsin; 39 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law, Marie Hogan of Monticello, Iowa, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, James F. Hogan and Martha (Lamey) Hogan; her husband, Roger W. Cummings; and her only brother, James T. Hogan.
