Irene Esther "Babi" Phillips (Sirowy)
February 4, 1915 — December 31, 2008
Irene E. Sirowy Kremenak Phillips (Babi), of 2955 Bowling Street S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Wednesday, December 31, 2008, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Services: 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 5, 2009, at St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church, by Father Tom McDermott. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m., Sunday, January 4, 2009, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, with a scripture wake at 5:00 p.m. Burial: St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith Schmidt of Cedar Rapids and Patricia Davis of Canby, Oregon.
Also surviving are two grandsons, Andrew (Stacie) Schmidt of Cedar Rapids and Matthew (Lyndsey) Davis of Canby, Oregon; three great grandchildren, Amanda Davis and Wiley and Augustus Donnerberg; a brother, Harold (Lil) Sirowy of Swisher; a sister, Bessie Sedlacek; and many nieces and nephews. Her extended family is step-daughter, Barbara (Robert) Smythe; step-son, Richard (Stephanie) Phillips of Cedar Rapids; four step-granddaughters; numerous step-great grandchildren; and several step-great great grandchildren.
Irene was preceded in death by two husbands, Wencil J. Kremenak on October 15, 1958 and Howard E. Phillips on November 27, 2001; her grandson, Michael Schmidt; her parents, Joseph F. and Anna M. (Holets) Sirowy; three brothers, Milo, Joe and Otto; and sisters, Vlasta Rabik and Libby Novy.
Irene was employed by the Gazette Classified Ad Department and loved dancing, golfing, bowling, playing cards and volunteering at Mercy Medial Center. She belonged to the Fairfax Senior Group, St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church and the Senior Group at St. Ludmila’s Catholic Church.
