Iola (McElroy) Aossey, 103, passed away June 12, 2013, at Evergreen Estates 1. At her request, her body was donated to the Anatomical Department of Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, and there will be no visitation or service. Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Iola was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Iola "Grammy Aossey" is survived by her daughter, Marvis Wanda Ribble; five grandsons, Steve (Cindy) Ribble of Cedar Rapids, Wayne (Sharon) Ribble of Starbuck, Minnesota, Royce Majors of Cedar Rapids, Randall (Kari) Majors of Boise, Idaho and Raymond (Ruth) Majors of New York; son-in-law, Bob Majors of Mt. Vernon; five great grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; daughter, Nancy Lee Majors; son in law, Gordon Ribble; four sisters, Waneita and Foleita McElroy, Velma Abraham and Zora Fuller; and two brothers, Harold and Ronald McElroy.
She was raised in Vinton where she graduated from High School, met and married Michael Aossey on February 11, 1929. They moved to Cedar Rapids where they opened Aossey Grocery and Market on J Street SW, across from Wilson School. Through the years, she has met many former High School and Middle School students all with their own stories of their remembrances of time spent getting their candy and ice cream at the store. She always felt her association with the students kept her young. In 1964 she received her diploma from the school of Swedish Massage, Chicago Illinois. She then opened Iola's Health Parlor. Iola, along with others, were trail blazers in the massage field of health care. She added foot reflexology in 1983. Through her holistic approach to health she was able to help others with her knowledge.
She always found the good in everyone and every situation and had a positive outlook on life. She had a special bond with her grandson Royce, sharing life’s moments and joys. Iola was kind and loving to all, especially her family, and will be greatly missed.
We know you have been welcomed at the Heavenly dining table by your parents and your six brothers and sisters. Your empty chair has now been filled. Sending you up our love and kisses!
Special thanks to ALL the Evergreen staff for their caring and compassionate care. She always said “They’re wonderful. They treat me like their own mother.” A big thank you to Hospice of Mercy for making her comfortable in her last days.
Memorials may be directed to a charity of your choice in Iola’s name.
