Hugh T. “Tom” Ellis, 80, of 436 8th Avenue S.W., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Saturday, July 24, 2010, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Services: 11:30a.m., Wednesday, July 28, 2010, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Pastor Al Biere. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at the funeral home. Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret “Marge” Ellis; siblings, Donald (Thelma) Ellis of Cedar Rapids, Phyllis (Phil) Kraft of Florida, Mary Jo Patterson of Florida, Jimmy Ellis of Cedar Rapids and Bobby (Gail) Ellis of Alabama; stepson, Denny (April) Zippe of Tipton; three granddaughters, Kaysea Zippe of Tipton, Chelsea (Tod) Gottschalk of Clarence and Mariah (Michael) Haedike of Clarence; five great-grandchildren, Jasmine Gottschalk of Clarence, Abagael O'Connell, Cohlten O'Connell, Aryaunna Haedike and Kyler Haedike; and special daughter, Sharon (Don) Stewart of Clarence.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Joann; brother, Jerry Ellis; step-daughter, Sandy Zippe; and brother-in-law, Pat Patterson.
Born May 10, 1930, in Summit, Alabama, Tom was the son of Luther and Mamie (Gleason) Ellis. He was in the U.S. Army, serving in Newfoundland, and after his discharge moved to Iowa where he worked at Johnson Gas and later for Acro, retiring after 15 years. He married Joann Allen who died in 1988. On October 27, 1990, he was united in marriage to Margaret Dicks-Zippe. Together they ran the E Avenue Tap until the flood of 2008.
