Howard Malone Tomlinson, 90, of 2405 25th Street SW, died Sunday, November 10, 2002, in Hospice of Central Iowa, Des Moines, from complications of a stroke. Services: 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 16, 2002, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Chris and Bob Lockebie. Burial: North English Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, November 15, 2002, at the funeral home.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda (David) Toerper and Barbara (Gary) McPherson, both of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Heather Toerper Lee (Yong), John Toerper, and Douglas, Robert and Nancy Beach; one great-grandson, Jacob; and special friend, Frances Neuleib of Knoxville, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Gail; his parents; three brothers, Thomas, Vernon and Richard Tomlinson; and three sisters, Josephine, Dora Hagge and Alice Hildreth.

Howard was born June 13, 1912, the son of George and Phoebe (Malone) Tomlinson, in Bondurant, Iowa. In 1936, he was united in marriage to Gail Knipfer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She died December 10, 1998. Nicknamed "Tommy?, Howard graduated from Coe College in 1939 and was a coach-educator in several Iowa towns, including Olin and Lansing, Iowa. Howard loved all sports, but particularly girls? six-on-six basketball. The highlight of his career was the girls team from Olin he coached to the State tournament in 1952. Howard loved to read, always alert to current events, history and western culture. He also enjoyed bargaining, camping, traveling and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Howard lived an exemplary Christian life of personal integrity and high moral standards. He will always be remembered for his character and concern for others.
