Howard L. Schmitz, 84, of Earlville, Iowa, died January 26, 2006 at his home of cancer.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 30, 2006 at Earlville United Parish by Rev. Ross Wyman. Friends may call from 2-7 p.m. on Sunday at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Earlville and one hour before services Monday at the church. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Earlville.
Howard was born September 24, 1921 in Earlville, the son of Phillip L. and Esther A. (Hunt) Schmitz. He graduated in 1939 from the Earlville Consolidated Schools. From 1942-1945, Howard served in the United States Air Transport Command during the CBI Theatre of Operation in India. On June 29, 1947, Howard was united in marriage to Mary Lou Gibbs in Earlville. He worked two years for Mack Manufacturing in Dyersville and from 1949-1983 as a bookkeeper at Farm Service in Earlville.
Howard was a member of the Earlville United Parish, Earlville Community Club, and was a Lifetime Member of the Carpenter-Diesch-White American Legion Post #436 and the New Vienna V.F.W. Post #7736 He enjoyed gardening and sharing his produce with friends. Howard also liked fishing, playing cards and collecting things.
Howard is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Schmitz of Earlville; a son, Alan L. (Joyce) Schmitz of Stout, IA; two grandsons, Andrew A. Schmitz of Cedar Falls and Daniel A. Schmitz of Stout, IA; a daughter-in-law, Wendy Schmitz of Bailey, CO; and a brother-in-law, Don Powell of Waverly.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip & Esther Schmitz; two sons, Roger L. Schmitz and David L. Schmitz; and a sister, Vivian Powell.
