Howard Frank Bellon

Howard Frank Bellon, 82, of Fairfax, died Wednesday, January 17, 2007, at St. Luke?s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, of C.O.P.D. Services: 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 22, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Laura Smith of Kenwood Park United Methodist Church. Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, January 21 at the funeral home. Burial: Lafayette Cemetery, rural Alburnett.
Howard is survived by his wife, Betty Bellon of Fairfax; two children, Frank (Julie) Bellon of Cedar Rapids and Nancy Kay Africa of Fairfax; two grandsons, Mark Africa of Fairfax and Jeff Africa of Masonville; and three great-grandchildren, Sarah, Lindsey and Tyler Africa; and one great-great-grandchild, Logan. He had been cared for during most of his illness by his loving daughter, Nancy.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Howard was born September 5, 1924, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Frank D. and Leona L. (Snider) Bellon. He attended Wilson High School. On May 27, 1942, Howard was united in marriage to Betty Steadman in Missouri. Howard was a decorated (Bronze Star and Purple Heart) World War II Veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the South Pacific. He worked as a crane operator for Coonrods, from which he retired in 1986.
Howard was a member of the Masonic Lodge, V.F.W., Fairfax American Legion and Operating Engineers. He enjoyed farming, was mechanically inclined, loved practical jokes and spending time with his family. Howard?s wit and perpetual good cheer have been an inspiration to all of us who knew and loved him.
The family would like to thank the nursing and hospice staff at St. Luke?s for the tireless effort and support.
