Herman Nebiker, Jr., 91, of Cedar Rapids, died July 4, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, suddenly. He was born April 16, 1922, in Burlington, Iowa, to Herman Sr. and Ella Nebiker; they moved to rural Cedar Rapids in 1925.

He is survived by his wife, Delores; two children, Richard (Cori) Nebiker, and Penny Barton (Daniel Koepping) all of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Heidi Bouz of Lexington, KY, Cassi (Ryan) Quinby of Marion, and Apollo Barton, Nicholas and Sam Nebiker all of Cedar Rapids. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Haille and McKenzie Wheeler, Nawal and Elias Bouz all of Lexington, KY, Cevan Walton and Cayden Quinby of Marion, and Cora and Logan Barton of Cedar Rapids.

Herman served with the First Marine Division in the Pacific during World War II. He participated in the battle for the Island of Okinawa and in the occupation of Mainland China.

Herman worked for Rockwell Collins as a Design Engineer for 38 years, retiring in 1986.

As a lifelong member of Salem United Methodist Church, he served in many capacities including over 50 years as an usher.

His hobbies include gardening, woodworking, and working on his collection of Volkswagens.

He was a charter member of the Volkswagen Club of America, and President of the Iowa Region. He was also a past member of the Sports Car Club of America.

Herman was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

The body has been donated to the University of Iowa Hospital Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology for clinical research. A Celebration of Life will take place Tuesday, July 9, 2013, from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion.
