Herbert H. Fear, 74, of 1631 Park Towne Court NE, Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, December 27, 2003, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, after a sudden illness. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today (Tuesday, Dec. 30) at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, where a memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. The Rev. Del Bear will officiate. Graveside services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2003, at Hopkinton Cemetery, Hopkinton, Iowa with Military rites.

Survivors include his brothers and sisters, Eve M. Elliott of Marion, Roy D. Fear of Central City and Emma (Earl) Reid of Urbana and Yuma, Arizona; a sister-in-law, Mildred Fear of Aurora; and his nieces and nephews, Lila (Lee) Opitz of Aurora, Bret Fear of Dubuque, Dennis (Kay) Fear of Monticello, Nancy (Jerry) Trowbridge of Durango, and Roger E. (Sharon) Reid of Marion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Wayne, John and Merle; and a sister, Elsie Fear.

Herbert was born on August 20, 1929, in Oneida, Iowa, the son of John F. and Verna (Meister) Fear. He served in the U.S. Marines from 1946-1970 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, Purple Heart, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Bronze Star Medal. Herbert served two active duty tours in Korea and Vietnam. Herbert had worked as a security guard at the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Palo.
