Rev. Henry “Hank” W. Charipar, 69, of Dubuque, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, October 14, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at St. Ludmila Catholic Church by The Most Rev. Jerome Hanus, O.S.B., Archbishop of Dubuque and Very Rev. Bernard C. Grady. Visitation will be at St. Ludmila from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday and after 9:30 am on Wednesday. Burial: Blain Cemetery in Swisher. Arrangements entrusted to Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include two brothers, Gerald (Mary) Charipar of Rochester, New York, and their children, Christine and Sarah, and Karl (Connie) Charipar of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and their children, Daniel and Paul (Amy); two sisters, Jo Brown of Minneapolis, Minnesota and Charlene Stellamaris of Clear Lake, Wisconsin, and her children, Abagail (Conor) Sabatino and Matthew (Angela) Radintz; four grand-nieces and three grand-nephews; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers-in-law, Wallace Brown and Raymond Radintz.
Fr. Hank was born January 23, 1942, the son of Henry W. and Bessie M. (Bohac) Charipar Sr. in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Regis High School in 1960 and Loras College in 1964, where he earned his B.A. in Philosophy. He studied Theology and graduated from Mount St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque.
Fr. Hank was ordained June 1, 1968, at the Cathedral in Dubuque by Most Rev. J.J. Bryne, S.T.D. Fr. Hank was the Associate Pastor at St. Mary Parish in Dubuque from 1968-1972; St. Francis de Sales Parish, Ossian from 1972-1976; and the former Assumption Parish, Cresco, 1976-1982. He also taught at Notre Dame High School in Cresco during those years. From 1982-1986, he served as Associate Pastor of Nativity Parish in Dubuque; served as Pastor at St. Mary’s in Dorchester, St, Mary’s in Hanover, and St. Joseph’s in New Albin from 1987-2000; and in Cresco and Bluffton from 2000 until his retirement in 2005.
Fr. Hank was a huge Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeye fan and enjoyed collecting Cub memorabilia and brass figurines. He loved to go to the casino and play draw poker.
One of life’s greatest gifts to Fr. Hank was the life saving gift of a kidney from Laura Lukes of Protivan, Iowa.
