Helen E. Shaffer, 92, of Manchester, Iowa, died Friday morning, June 13, 2003, at the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, following a brief illness.
Graveside committal services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 15, 2003, at Oakland Cemetery in Manchester, Iowa. Friends may call after 1:30 pm on Sunday at the Bohnenkamp-Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service.
Helen E. Shaffer was born January 12, 1911, in Monticello, Illinois, the daughter of Charles Elmer & Burnzie Ann (Reese) Shaffer. Helen?s family lived in Michigan before moving to Iowa when she was five. Helen attended school in Greeley and Oneida, graduating from the Oneida High School in 1929. She received her normal training at the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls.
In 1946 Helen went to work at the Montrose Hotel in Cedar Rapids as a food service manager. In later years she worked at the Kozy Inn Restaurant, Cedar Rapids, and served as Hostess for the Elks Club. Helen retired in 1980 to care for her father until his death. In July of 1995, Helen moved to Manchester.
Helen is a member of the Community Congregational United Church of Christ in Manchester, Iowa.
Helen is survived by her sister-in-law, Jean Shaffer of Manchester and her nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Charles & Burnzie Ann Shaffer and three brothers, Staff Sergeant Charles M. "Brick? Shaffer, who died in 1944 during World War II, Robert Shaffer, who died in 1985, and Ervin J. Shaffer on September 5, 1999.
