Helen A. Opfer, 78, of Central City, died at Linn Manor Care Center, Monday, August 18, 2008. Services: 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 21, 2008, at First United Methodist Church, Central City, by Rev. Nick Needham. The family will greet friends from 4 - 8 p.m., Wednesday, August 20, 2008 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, Iowa. Burial: Cedar Memorial Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Survivors include two sons, Robert (Cheryle) Opfer of Cedar Rapids and Richard (Peggy) Opfer of Central City; three grandchildren, Rob (Amanda) Opfer, Camille (Matthew) Franklin and Cherob Opfer; four great-grandchildren, Maggie & Kaleb, Opfer Savannah & Breanna Franklin; one brother, Walter (Eunice) Holderness of Millersburg, Iowa; 2 sisters, Doris Gorsch of Williamsburg, Iowa and Shirley (Dennis) Gent of Webster, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a granddaughter, Melissa Opfer and a brother, Robert Holderness.
Helen was born October 14, 1929, the daughter of Harry and Alice (Tinkle) Holderness, near Millersburg, Iowa. She married Gene Opfer on January 29, 1949 in Millersburg, Iowa. He died on July 30, 1994. Helen was a member of the United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and a past president of the Linn County Farm Bureau Women.
A memorial fund has been established in Helen’s name.
