Helen Gertrude Mohni, 85, a resident of Keystone Cedars Assisted Living in Cedar Rapids, died Friday, January 9, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center. Funeral Services: 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 12, 2009, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids by Rev. Perry Fruhling and Rev. Alfred Kaupins. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, January 11, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion. Graveside services: 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 13, at Lone Tree Cemetery in Everly, Iowa. A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly by Rev. Lauren Ley. Warner Funeral Home in Everly is also assisting the family.
Left to cherish Helen’s memory are her two sons and their families: Dennis and his wife, Jeanie of Summerset, South Dakota, grandchildren, Dustin and Brandon of Longmont, Colorado; one great-grandchild, Emily of Longmont, Colorado; three step-grandchildren, Jenny Buckley, Holly Stalder, and Jonathan Toth, all of Whitewood, South Dakota. Her son, Jim and his wife, Nancy Metier Mohni live in Cedar Rapids, daughters, Audrey and Anna, and many close, devoted friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, Fritz and Lawrence Just; and two sisters, Ella Mohni and Mabel Beckman.
Helen was born July 16, 1923, the daughter of Fredrick and Gertrude (Krahling) Just in Nobles County, Minnesota. She lived her childhood years in the Westbrook, Marshall, and Wilmont areas. Helen graduated from Fulda High School in Fulda, Minnesota and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught country school near Hartley, Iowa, after graduation.
Helen was united in marriage to Oscar Mohni on June 15, 1945. They made their home near Everly, Iowa, farmed, and fed cattle. Helen also worked different jobs outside the home and devoted much of her time to the family. In 1969, they moved to Everly, where Helen and Oscar resided until 1993, when they moved to Spencer, Iowa. Oscar passed away in March of 1994. Helen then moved to Cedar Rapids to be near family.
She was a devoted member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, and Hope Lutheran Church, Everly. Her active involvement included quilting, Bible studies, Ladies’ Circle, and teaching Sunday school. Helen also spent considerable amounts of time with personal devotions and ministering to family and friends.
Helens hobbies included playing cards, gardening, cooking, and painting. One of her true loves was writing poetry, which expressed her inner thoughts and compassion.
