Helen M. Frederick, 90, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, April 30, 2009. Funeral Mass: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2009 at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids by Father Michael Podhajsky with visitation one hour prior to the service. Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. Graveside Service: 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Cass Township Cemetery in Strawberry Point.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia (Don) Schuettpelz; a brother, Harlan (Marge) DeSotel; a granddaughter, Jill (Mike) Hay; a grandson, Michael Schuettpelz; and a great-grandson, Charles Hay.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; four brothers; and two sisters.
Helen was born September 16, 1918, the daughter of Edward and Blanche (Maeder) DeSotel at Dubuque. She was united in marriage to Edward Frederick on June 7, 1937, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church. He died June 5, 1988. They lived in Edgewood until 1952 and then moved to Marion where they owned and operated the Marion Shell. Helen worked at Montgomery Wards farm service department. The couple moved to Manchester in 1972, where they owned and operated “The Barn”, selling it in 1975. Helen worked at the Good Neighbor Nursing Home. She moved to Hiawatha in 1991.
