Helen was born January 11, 1929, in Solon, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Anna Marie (Svoboda) Zajicek. She graduated from McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids. She went to nursing school at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. She became a nurse at Mercy Hospital where she met her husband, Tom. On November 17, 1951, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, they were united in marriage. When she stopped working as a nurse, she cared for her own ten kids and neighbors, with a quick Band-Aid or a cookie depending upon the damage. Helen spent her retirement traveling with Tom in their motorhome. She loved to fly above the clouds; their soaring took them to Taiwan, Hawaii, and the South Pacific. Helen loved the white sands of Florida and the forest of Palisades. She lived with grace and an abundance of faith. This tiny woman could instigate people to rise and dance and realize life was fun. She taught us to leave this world with a smile, some dancing and a half a beer. Helen leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew her, and faith in a beautiful place beyond her pain….. where she laughs and dances again.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her children, Marian (Mike) Loeffler, Wanda (Vance) Gordon, Gary (Lin) Driscoll, Carol (Brian) Davis, Joan (Steve) Forsyth, Brenda (Scott) Bertrand, Gregg (Kim) Driscoll, Brian (Sue) Driscoll, and Sheila (Paul) Speral; son-in-law, Roy Rhodes; 19 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many special nieces and nephews that were dear to her heart.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Tom; daughter, Linda Rhodes; grandson, Jacob Driscoll; four brothers, Frank Zajicek, Jr., Clarence Zajicek, Leonard Zajicek, and Joseph Zajicek; and two sisters, Cecilia Scott and Betty Hamm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Helen’s memory may be directed to St. Joseph Catholic Church or Hospice of Mercy.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff at Hallmar for the love, care and compassion they gave to Helen.
