Helen Marie (Aileen) Cole, 84, of 2324 Victoria Dr. SW, died Monday, March 29, 2004, in her home, following a short illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Friday, April 2, 2004, at St. Ludmilas Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Tom McDermott. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 1, 2004, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, where a Scripture service will begin at 7:00 p.m. and one hour prior to service at the church. Burial: St. Patrick?s Cemetery, Watkins, Iowa.
Survivors include her children, Ronald (Almeda) B. Cole of Fort Collins, Colorado, Richard L. Cole of Victor, Iowa, Robert A. Cole of Cedar Rapids and Sue (Roger) A. Barton of Lombard, Illinois; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; and three brothers, Jack, Joe and Jim Downes.
Aileen was born August 5, 1919, the daughter of Christy and Nellie (Delaney) Downes, in Iowa County, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Harold V. Cole on March 1, 1938, in Watkins, Iowa. He died May 5, 1987. For 18 years, Aileen worked in the Food Management Department for the Cedar Rapids Community Schools. A member of the St. Ludmilas Catholic Church, she was active in the Kolache Festival and other church fund raisings.
