Hazel Mary Nieman, age 91, of the Good Neighbor Home, Manchester, Iowa and formerly of Earlville, died Sunday, May 4, 2008 at the Regional Medical Center in Manchester after a short illness.
Funeral Services will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 7, 2008 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Earlville with Intern Marvin Havard officiating. Friends may call from 4 - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at the Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home in Earlville and one hour before service at the church. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Earlville.
Hazel, the daughter of Amiel “Emil” A. and Mary (Monaghan) Kehrli was born June 8, 1916 near Ryan. Following the death of her mother, Hazel at age 5 was raised by her grandmother Elise Kehrli at Ryan. She attended school at Manchester and Ryan, graduating from St. John’s High School in Ryan. Following graduation, Hazel worked for the Schultz 5 & 10. Hazel married Albert Nieman on January 22, 1950 at the First Lutheran Church in Manchester. They farmed west of Earlville until retirement.
Hazel was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church and in the community of Earlville. She was known for raising chickens and selling the eggs. Hazel enjoyed working in her garden.
Hazel is survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Nieman in May, 2003; her parents. Emil A. and Mary Kehrli; and two sisters: Harriett Swanson and Mildred Piquet.
