Harry A. Runyan, 81, of Marion, Iowa, passed away peacefully Monday, June 18, 2018, at his home. Visitation: 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2018, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Marion, Iowa. Graveside service: 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2018, at Pilot Mound Cemetery, Pilot Mound, Iowa, with military honors. A luncheon will be held immediately following burial.
Harry was born March 23, 1937, in Boone, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Myrtle (Loveless) Runyan. On September 24, 1958, he was united in marriage with Nancy Lee Zunkel. Harry enlisted into the United States Navy where he retired after 25 years as a Master Chief. During this time in the Navy he served in the Vietnam War. He then worked as a Quality Engineer for Solar Turbines in San Diego, California where he retired in 2000. Harry was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch #216, the American Legion Post #298, American Welding Society, and he volunteered for the Oceanside Police Department in San Diego. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed bowling and working for the Cedar Rapids Kernels.
Harry is survived by his wife, Nancy of Marion; sons, Philip (Carolyn) Runyan of Round Rock, Texas, and Timothy (Sheila) Runyan of Marion; daughters, Theresa Hobbs (Martin McKusick) of Iowa City and Nicole (Scott) Harrell of Hemet, California; grandchildren, Lindsey, Madison, Brandon, Jordan, Sadie, Mathew, Brody, Colton; brothers, John (Kathy) Runyan and Roy (Jodi) Runyan both of Urbandale; sisters, Louise Saltzman of Council Bluffs and Margaret (Lionel) Williams of Maricopa, Arizona; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Pamela; infant son, Lindsay, and sister, Shirley Runyan.
