Harry Michael Holmes, 67, of 705 Brandon Ave., Hiawatha, died Thursday, January 28, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 1, 2010 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by Rev. Del Bear. The family will greet friends from 2 ?" 6, Sunday, January 31, 2010 at the funeral home. Burial: Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Military rites provided by Marion American Legion Post #298.
Survivors include his children, Jeff (Jen) Holmes of Cedar Rapids, Sandra Holmes (Bob Brown) of Mt. Vernon, and Brian (Noelle) Holmes of Cedar Rapids; 3 sisters, Mary Harman, Joan Phillips, and Rita Reilly, all of Cedar Rapids; 4 granddaughters, Shawndella Holmes, Brittany Julis-Holmes, KyLeigh Holmes, and Isabelle Brown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters, Barbara Painter and Fannie Davidson; and 2 brothers, William “Bill” Holmes and Joseph “Pete” Holmes.
Harry was born January 1, 1943, the son of Harry and Katherine (Funcke) Holmes, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He graduated from Regis High School in 1961. Harry married Ragiena Woods on June 24, 1967. They later divorced. He was employed at Quaker Oats in the packaging department for 38 years, retiring in 2004, and served in the U.S. Marine Corp. Harry was an avid Hawkeye fan and enjoyed traveling and playing chess.
