Harry was born and educated in England. He met his wife where they both worked, and married in 1932. Harry was called in 1939, to serve in WWII, and served as a Major in the British Army. He spent most of the war years in India, Afghanistan, and Burma. After the war, he and Gladys opened a dry cleaning business in Essex, England. In 1957, they immigrated to California with their son, Richard. Here he developed his love for art. Harry started painting, but soon found that his primary devotion was to ceramics. He was a founding member of The Artist’s Studio of the Palos Verdes Art Center. Harry created ceramic styles revoking images of structures of the deserts, Middle East and native England. These were built using the slab construction technique, each one unique with Sagger and Raku firing as the primary medium. His works are in many Southern California collections, and in the permanent collection of The Museum of Ceramic Art at Alfred University, New York, Santa Rosa, and the Museum of Petropavlovsk in Russia. He received many awards for the contribution to the art, which included The Excellence in Art Award conferred by the City of Torrance in 1999. In 2004, Harry moved to Iowa to be close to his son and family.

Harry was preceded in death by his wife Gladys; brother, George; parents, Jane and Harry; and great-grandson, Jacob Johnson

. He is survived by his son, Richard and wife Nancy; granddaughters, Kim Johnson and Courtney Fuller; and great granddaughter; Remi Kate Johnson.
