Harry DeFord, 69, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, November 12, 2010, at St. Luke’s Hospital, after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral Services: 1:00 p.m. Monday, November 15, 2010, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids by Pastor Gary Hoyt. Visitation will be from 4-6:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service. Burial: Linwood Mausoleum.
Survivors include his wife, Judy DeFord of Cedar Rapids; his children, Steven (Natalie) DeFord of Cedar Rapids, Camy Jo DeFord of Cedar Rapids, Doug Deitch of Iowa, and Candy Dickel of Iowa; and four grandchildren, Stevie DeFord, Kaylee DeFord, Jake Schiel, and Katee Jo Schiel.
Also surviving are five siblings, Donna Baker of Albia, Charles “Buddy” (Sue) DeFord of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Jerry (Donna) DeFord of Cedar Rapids, Robert DeFord of Mason City, and Penny (Charlie) Wilcox of Drakesville; his mother-in-law, Helen Irven of Bloomfield; a special uncle, Rex Carlson of New Boston, Illinois and special aunt, Treva (Daryl) Steinbeck of Owensboro, Kentucky; and several special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Chester; his father-in-law, Mike Irven; and a sister, Mary Kitterman.
Harry was born June 12, 1941, the son of Charles and Irma (Jacobs) DeFord in Ottumwa. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1961. On December 30, 1966, he married Judy Irven in Bloomfield, Iowa. Harry served with the U.S. Army from 1965-1967 in Germany. He worked at Quaker Oats for 34 years.
Harry was active in AFL-CIO Food & Cereal Workers Union Local #110. He attended St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Harry was an avid gambler and lifetime Hawkeye and Cubs fan. He enjoyed auto racing at all levels from Hawkeye Downs to NASCAR. Harry loved spending time with his grandchildren and close friends. Harry and Judy enjoyed warm winters at their home in DeBary, Florida.
