Harold W. Merritt, 77, of Walker, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, April 12, 2005, in his home with his loving family. Services: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 16, 2005, at the Walker Bible Church, Walker, by Rev. Don Henderson. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2005, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Center Point and one hour prior to service time at the church. Burial: Walker Cemetery, Walker, with military honors.

Survivors include his children, Linda (Rich) Toole of Downers Grove, Illinois, Sandra (John) Lewis of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Carol (Michael) Newland, of Lake City, Iowa, Robert (Anna) Merritt of Walker, Iowa, Jerry (Toey) Merritt of Center Point, Iowa, Steven (Kathy) Merritt of Williamsburg, Iowa, William (Debra) Merritt of Marion, Iowa, and Jeanne (Keith) Dietrich of Williamsburg, Iowa; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen Peyton of Coggon, Iowa and Virginia Kirchner of Indiana; and a brother, Jim (Kay) Merritt of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Gordon and Paul; and a grandson, Nicholas.

Harold was born October 25, 1927, the son of Andrew and Eleanor Brunen Merritt, in Waubeek, Iowa. On September 29, 1945, he was united in marriage to Janice McCalley, in Hancock, Iowa. She died March 28, 1997. Harold served in the Army/AirForce during World War II with the 9th Bombardier Squadron 7th Battallion Group. For 25 years, he owned and operated Merritt Electric and also was a rural letter carrier for Walker.

Harold was a member of the Walker Bible Church, where he was the volunteer groundskeeper for 23 years and a member of the Rural Letter Carriers Association. He was an avid fisherman, who also loved creating woodworking projects for his family and spending time in his garden, taking pride in his tomatoes and green beans. As a loving father and grandfather, he enjoyed family gatherings.

Military honors by Walker American Legion #376.
