Harold A. Hall, 92, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, October 27, 2006, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, surrounded by his family including his beloved niece, Gayelle Bowdish, following a brief illness. Funeral Mass: 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 30, 2006, at St. Ludmila?s Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Tom McDermott. The family will greet friends from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, October 29, 2006, with a Scripture Service at 5 p.m. at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. Burial: Anderson Cemetery, Swisher.
Survivors include a son, H. Douglas Hall of Edmond, Oklahoma; a daughter-in-law, Laura Ellen Hall of Edmond, Oklahoma; two stepchildren, Sam (Diane) Stahle and Jocile (Dave) Cilek both of Solon; three grandchildren, Christopher (Dina) Hall of Naperville, Illinois, Jennifer (Paul) Boren and Molly (Matt) Travis, all of Edmond, Oklahoma; six step grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and eleven step great-grandchildren.
Harold "Papa? was loved by his numerous nieces, nephews, and his sidekick, Ben.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alma; his son?s mother, Zella; three brothers, Donald, Dillon, Gordon and infant Byron; a sister, Berniece; and a great-granddaughter, Mary.
Harold was born April 28, 1914, the son of Albert and Jesse Belle (Johnston) Hall, in Onslow, Iowa. He served in the United States Army Air Corps. On March 23, 1940, he married Zella Barrows in Springville, Iowa. They later divorced. He then married Alma Serbousek Stahle on November 14, 1964, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She died in 1995.
In 1936, Harold made the roster for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team and we are sure that he is thrilled to know they won the World Series. He was a pilot and flight instructor for Hunter Field, and later became a partner in Wathan?s Flying Service. Harold enjoyed auto racing, especially NASCAR and the Indianapolis 500. In 55 years, he only missed attending three Indy 500 races. Harold also was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan.
He was a member of the St. Ludmila?s Catholic Church, the Quiet Birdman Club and the Elks Club.
