Harold W. Grissom, 74 of 5460 Vermont St. SW, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004, at St. Luke?s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, following a sudden illness. Graveside services: 2 p.m. Saturday, May 22, 2004 at Thorpe Union Cemetery in rural Manchester with military rites. Friends may call from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m Saturday, May 22, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion.
Survivors include his wife, June of Cedar Rapids; six children, David Grissom of Troy Mills and special friend, Denise Bridges, Dennis Grissom and wife Stephanie of Marion, Deb LaKose and husband Dave of Cedar Rapids, Daniel Grissom and wife Sherry of North English, Don Grissom and special friend Emili Nove of Marion and DeAnna Houk and husband Russell of Cedar Rapids; fourteen grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters, Beverly Noska and husband Leonard of Solon and Claudia "Jane? Griffin and husband Tom of Winthrop; his in-laws, Dorothy and Bill Farmer of Wisconsin, Niles and Yvonne Theel of Marion, Wanda Hentges of Masonville, Bev and John Fannon of Edgewood, Erma and Bill Wulfekhule of Manchester and Corrine Theel of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Donna Jane Grissom and Denise Joan Grissom; a son, Douglas Wyatt Grissom; and two brother-in-laws, Bob Theel and Dick Hentges.
Harold was born November 6, 1929, the son of Melvin "Cecil? and Pearl (Vannoy) Grissom in Batavia, Iowa. He attended school in Buchanan County and helped his parents on the family farm. Harold was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Korea. Upon discharge he returned to Iowa and worked at National Oats in Cedar Rapids. On November 6, 1953, he married June Theel at the First Lutheran Church in Manchester. In 1954 he moved to a farm near Masonville. In 1961, Harold went to work for Pioneer Seed Corn in Reinbeck and Waterloo. He then moved to Cedar Rapids in 1962 and worked in the Nash Finch warehouse. Harold later worked for Dearborn Brass and retired from Reserve Supply in Cedar Rapids in 1992.
Harold was a member of the Machinist Union and the American Legion in Strawberry Point. He enjoyed watching and feeding birds, spending time with his family and was an avid Hawkeye fan.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to either Camp Courageous or the American Lung Association in Harold?s memory.
