Grace Laxson, 83, of Muncie, Indiana, formerly of Earlville, Iowa, passed away Thursday morning, April 4, 2013 at Westminster Village in Muncie.

She was born October 20, 1929 in Earlville, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and M. Floy Laxson.

She received her early education in the Earlville school system and after graduation earned a teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers College, now the University of Northern Iowa. She also earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and a master’s degree from Colorado State University in Greeley, CO.

Grace was dedicated to elementary teaching. She schooled military dependents for several years, mostly in Europe. Upon returning to the United States, she applied at Ball State University in Muncie, IN and was hired to teach in the Burris School. At Burris she taught generations of young students as well as mentoring college students in the art of teaching. She worked at Ball State nearly forty years before retiring. In 2011 she moved to Westminster Village.

Her job allowed Grace to travel for summer excursions and she traveled extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. She loved sightseeing and bringing home memoirs from such places as the Holy Land and the Egyptian pyramids but her final trip; a visit to the Baseball Hall of Fame with two siblings, was a special highlight. She enjoyed playing bridge and cheering for her favorite sports teams: the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs. She was also an avid collector and was especially proud of her large Santa Claus collection.

Survivors include four sisters, Mary Buffum, Ruth Collins, Lois Stewart, and Carol Laxson; one brother, James; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Charles and John.

Grace will be missed by her family and friends who will always recall her ready laugh and strong sense of fun.

A Memorial Service for Grace will be held in Earlville, Iowa at a later date. Cremation will take place. Cards may be directed to Clifton-Murdoch Funeral Home, 110 Northwest St., Earlville, IA 52041.
