Gordon F. Newton, 86, of 345 Marion Blvd., Marion, Iowa, died Friday, April 2, 2004, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, after a short illness. Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, by the Rev. Del Bear. Friends may call at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until service time on Tuesday. Graveside services: 2 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2004, at Crystal Lake Cemetery, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Survivors include his daughter, Joyce (Vern) McCormick of Marion; four grandchildren, Michael (Tera) Frankenberg of Pillager, Minnesota, John (Tara) Frankenberg of Grand Island, Nebraska, Jim McCormick of Eudora, Kansas, and Molly McCormick of Marion, Iowa; eight great-grandchildren; and Cheryl Frankenberg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mabel; and two brothers, Donald and Robert.
Gordon was born the son of Frederick and Mabel Peterson Newton on March 29, 1918, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was married there to Mabel Everson on August 30, 1947. She died July 8, 1998. During World War II, Gordon served in the U.S. Army Infantry. He was employed by the Burlington Northern Railroad in Minneapolis for forty years. Gordon was a life member of Clarence LaBelle V.F.W. Post No. 217 in Minneapolis.
