Gladys Lorraine Haar, 96, of Solon, died Saturday, March 28, 2015. A Graveside Service will take place at Czech National Cemetery at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 1, 2015. Following the service, the family will greet friends at The Legacy Center, located at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service at 520 Wilson Avenue SW, Cedar Rapids, for a time of sharing of memories of Gladys as well as refreshments.
Born November 17, 1918, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Frank and Blanche Schultz, Gladys grew up on an acreage and enjoyed helping with the harvesting of fruits and vegetables grown by her family. She enjoyed spending time with her cousins and attending school.
Gladys married Henry F. Haar on January 15, 1946, and they then began their 47-year journey together. Gladys was employed by Collins Radio Company for many years. She then devoted her time to raising her daughter, Kay, running the household, and was there to support her husband during his working years. Gladys and her husband enjoyed their memberships with VFW, American Legion, Cedar Rapids Elks Club #251, dancing at the Walford Ponderosa Ballroom and eleven years of membership as Westdale Mallwalkers.
Gladys’ passions in life included a lifetime of music from playing the piano and electronic organ, to ballroom dancing, to the simple pleasures of working in her yard and baking kolaches and rolls.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who was always there to help in a time of need. She will always be remembered for her kind ways and devotion to her family, as it expanded from daughter, to son-in-law, to grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors are her daughter, Kay E. Jennings and her husband Barry of Solon; two granddaughters, Valerie Jennings and Michelle (Neal) Camber of Kansas; five great-grandchildren, Alexa Ann, Austin Michael, Tyler Neal, Zac Alexander and Adrianna Elise; nephews, Jim (Sue) Schultz and Sam (Ione) Schultz; and nieces, Mary Cay (Jack) Uthe and Dorothy (Leo) Sonka.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Henry; infant daughter, Rita Lorraine; two brothers, Leonard and Richard Schultz; and nephew, David Schultz.
A special thank you to Hospice-Unity Point.
