Gilbert E. Titler, 86, of Urbandale, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, in Iowa Methodist Hospital, Des Moines, following a short illness. Services: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 15, 2003, at St. Matthews Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Mark Osterhaus. Burial: Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today (Friday) at Murdoch Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Marion, where a Vigil service will be held at 7 p.m.

Surviving are his wife Mary; a daughter, Mary Virginia (Patrick) Hurley of Urbandale; a son, John (Leslie) Titler of Cedar Rapids; and a brother Robert (Virginia) Titler of Alburnett.

Also surviving are nine grandchildren; and seventeen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Helen Wassmer and a brother, Marvin Titler.

Born the son of Nathan A. and Hester I. Napier Titler on February 26, 1917, in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. On February 6, 1941, in Central City, he was united in marriage to Mary Roby. Gilbert served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was employed at Rockwell Collins Radio, retiring in 1975. Gilbert was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids, Catholic Laymen, and the Holy Name Society at St. Matthews.

Gilbert was an avid sports fan and truly enjoyed cheering for his grandkids and their teams. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking. Gilbert was a strong and generous man.
