Gertrude E. Barkwill, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, September 18, 2010, at the West Ridge Care Center, Cedar Rapids. Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids, by Rev. Jonathan Offt. Visitation: 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her children, Scott and Sue of Vinton, Steve (Annette Ulch) of Atkins and “adopted daughter” Sharron (Harry Naughton) Johnson of Marion; granddaughter, Andrea Babbitt; sister-in-law, Norma Webert of Williamsburg; and four granddogs.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; brothers, Harold, Otto (Lillian) and Arnold; and special friend, Bill Burton.
Gertrude was born September 16, 1923, the daughter of Otto and Frieda (Tschopp) Webert, in New Hampton, Iowa. She attended St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Luzerne and then moved to Cedar Rapids in 1941. Gertrude went to work for Rockwell Collins during the war and retired from there in 1982. On September 2, 1950, she was united in marriage to Charles Barkwill at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. He died in January of 1960.
A member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Gertrude was very active in her church Home Ministry of Trinity and All Church Singles of Cedar Rapids. She enjoyed painting, flowers, gardening, going to theatre plays and loved to travel with her group of girlfriends. Gertrude also was a fantastic cook and a generous blood donor.
