Gerald Fay Henderson, 89, of Marion, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2023, at his home in Marion. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church, located at 802 12th Street in Marion. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. at the church, with Pastor Jim Langley officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Oak Shade Cemetery in Marion. Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Marion is assisting the family.

Gerald was born on June 24, 1933, on a farm in Central City, Iowa, the son of Lloyd Chandler and Winnie Alice (Burnside) Henderson. He attended the Little Red School, a one-room schoolhouse in Delaware County, Iowa, until completing his education at Coggon High School. Gerald served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On December 22, 1957, Gerald was united in marriage to Judith “Judie” Kay Hamblin at the First Congregational Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He worked for the Department of Transportation for nearly 40 years, painting lines in 14 counties during the summer and plowing snow in the winter. Gerald loved watching NASCAR and had a passion for anything with four wheels. He loved washing and waxing all his cars, especially his “third son”, his 1996 Impala SS, which was his pride and joy. Gerald enjoyed his many trips with his wife, Judie, and loved spending time with family and friends. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as an usher. Gerald will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Gerald is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife of 65 years, Judie; two sons, Scott (Kathy) Henderson of Glenview, Illinois, and Aric (Kathy) Henderson of Winterset, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Brian Henderson and Michael Henderson, both of Chicago, Illinois, Katie (John) Brungard of Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey, Kristin Henderson (Kelyn Rickels) of Boone, Iowa, Aaron Henderson of Vinton, Iowa, Amanda (Tony) Luna of Des Moines, Iowa, and Reggie (Nicole) Thomas of Norwalk, Iowa; four great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; brother, Merle Henderson of Coggon, Iowa; two sisters, Garnet Henderson, and Marilyn Hejda both of Cedar Rapids; one sister-in-law, Betty Jo (Earl) Smith or Truckee, California; one brother-in-law, Bob Dighton of Missouri; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Wally and Keith Henderson; four sisters-in-law, Verla Henderson, Donna Henderson, Darlene Baumgartner, and Mabel Ann Dighton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a favorite charity of donor’s choice.
