Gerald Lee Hayworth, of Marion, went home to be with his Lord and his dear wife on November 21, 2006, at age 86. A celebration of his life will be held at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 25, 2006. The service will be conducted by Grant Hagan. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and from 9:30 -10:00 a.m. Saturday. Private burial: Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion.
Gerald is survived by two daughters, Marcia Cary and husband Hal of Tucson, Arizona, and Debbie Bowen and husband Rod of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Kim Cary of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Jennilee Cordes and husband Jason, Dan Bowen and wife Elissa, and great-granddaughter, Lorien Cordes, all of Cedar Rapids.
Gerald was born March 1, 1920, the son of Philip and Juanita (Shew) Hayworth in Vermillion County, Indiana. He married Alice Marie Branson on May 25, 1944, and they were blessed with sixty-one wonderful years together. Alice preceded him in death on December 27, 2005.
Gerald proudly served his country as a Major in the U.S. Marines. He was in the South Pacific from 1942 through May of 1944 and was then stationed in San Clemente, California. Gerald was a teacher, principal and superintendent of schools. He was honored as the National Outstanding Educator of the Year in 1965. Gerald and Alice began music ministries at many care centers. He touched countless lives with both his beautiful tenor voice and his amazing harmonica playing. Most importantly, he was an outstanding man; a consistent example of integrity and courage for his family and his community. His unwavering faith was a light for all who had the privilege of knowing him. He was a member of Squaw Creek Baptist Church in Marion.
