Gerald W. Hansel, 70, of 924 Regent St. NE, Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, February 7, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, after a sudden illness. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, February 11, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, by the Rev. Donald Klein. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. Friends may call from 4 - 8 p.m. Tuesday (Feb. 10) at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion, where a rosary will be recited by the Knights of Columbus at 5:30 p.m. and a parish vigil service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Military rites will be conducted by the Marion American Legion Post 298 following the rosary.

Survivors include his wife, Elaine; five sons, Randy of Edmond, Oklahoma, Scott (Kelly) of Cedar Rapids, Jeff (Debi) of Berwyn, Illinois, Gerald Jr. (Charity) of Walford and Brian (Michelle) of Naperville, Illinois; two daughters, Kristy (George) Harker of Cedar Rapids and Mary Lynn Hansel and fiancé, Matt Ament of Mesa, Arizona; and eight grandchildren, Kyle, Keri, Emily, Nicholas, Colin, Bryor, Michelle and Hannah.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gerald was born June 2, 1933, in Garber, Iowa. He was the son of Anton Smith and Gladys Hansel. Gerald served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. On October 26, 1957, he married Elaine Lucas in Holy Cross, Iowa. Gerald worked for Rockwell-Collins for forty-years, retiring in 1995 as a buyer in the test equipment department. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and an active member of the Knights of Columbus.

Gerald was an avid racecar fan and for several years, worked in the pits for the Mudd Brothers racing team.
