Gerald Robert “Bob” Mathews, 84, of 4420 Bowling St. S.W., Cedar Rapids, died Monday, December 3, 2007 at home, following a long illness. Services: 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 6, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids by Pastor Robert Blake. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, December 5, 2007 and on Thursday following the service from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife, Eunice; his children, Beverly (David) Myers of Atkins, Iowa; Cathy Ham of Fairfax, Iowa; Brenda (Pat) Quandt of Coggon, Iowa; and Robert (Michelle) Mathews of Riverside, California; his stepchildren, Cynthia Blake of Olathe, Kansas; David Blake of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Christopher Blake of Anamosa, Iowa; and Robert (Andrea) Blake, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Other survivors include a sister, Geraldine Davis of Greencastle, Missouri; his grandchildren, Melissa, William, Chelsea, Jenifer, Jared, Chad, Brittany, Sarah, Uriah, and Elisha; great grandchildren, Keria, Keonna, Kaidrah, KaSaundra, Deighton, William II, Melody; and his beloved dog, Rufus.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a step-daughter, Paula Blake; two sisters, Geneva Vlahovich, and Georgia Vlahovich; brother, Bill Mathews and a granddaughter, Misty Hayes.
Bob was born March 5, 1923, the son of Ralph and Nellie (Martin) Mathews, in Livonia, Missouri. He married Joyce Brown and later they divorced. He later married Eunice (Weaver) Blake on November 12, 1994 in Cedar Rapids.
Bob was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Machinist Union 831 and was a member of the Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame. Bob played fast pitch softball until the age of 70. As a pitcher, he was known for his curve ball. He was a quiet man and enjoyed his family, walking in the woods, gardening, sports, westerns, and the St. Louis Cardinals.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Bob’s name.
