Gerald E. Barrett, 77, formerly of Marion, died Wednesday, December 14, 2005 at the Woodlands at Methwick Retirement Community following a long illness.
Services: 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 17, 2005 at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Marion by Rev. Dan Kolander. Visitation: 4-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.
Gerald is survived by two children, Edward (Catherine) Barrett of Cedar Rapids and Carla (Shawn) Garvey of Lynbrook, NY; four step-children, Bruce (Mary) Westcott of Cedar Rapids, Steven (Tamara) Westcott of Marion, James (Ruth) Westcott of Cedar Rapids and Vickie Knepper of Harper, IA; eleven grandchildren, Diana & Julia Garvey, Elizabeth & Amanda Barrett, Katherine (Dustin) Thorne, Benjamin Westcott, Christina Westcott, Jasen (Michelle) Westcott, Mike Campbell, D.J. and Nicole Knepper; three great-grandchildren, Thomas & Alyssa Andrews and Victoria Thorne; and three brothers, Kenny (Betty) Barrett of Cedar Rapids, Cliff (Linda) Barrett of Hiawatha, and Richard Barrett of California.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur & Hazel Barrett; wife, Rose Lee Barrett on June 14, 2000; and a sister, Patricia Fillmore.
Gerald was born April 19, 1928 in Pittsburgh, PA, the son of Arthur & Hazel (Hinkle) Barrett. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Army during the Korean Conflict. Gerald was united in marriage to Rose Lee J. Olmstead on August 13, 1966 in Marion. He was a member of the American Legion Hanford Post #5 of Cedar Rapids. Gerald found a love of gardening and enjoyed tending the gardens at Milestones Adult Day Health Center in Cedar Rapids.
