George W. Rosel, Jr., 85, of Bertram, died Saturday, June 14, 2008, at Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, following a courageous battle with cancer. Services: 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2008, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Center in Marion by Rev. Elaine Jones. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial: Campbell Cemetery in Bertram with military honors provided by Shellsburg American Legion Post No. 166.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-five years, Marla; four children, Shirley (Roger) Hanson of St. Ansgar, Sandy McNamara of Cedar Rapids, Kirk (Kris) Rosel of Shellsburg, and Craig (Jeri) Rosel of Bertram; two sisters, Doris Erdman of Northwood and Leola Ruehlow of St. Ansgar; thirteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; two brothers (one in infancy); and a daughter, Renee Rosel.

George was born February 19, 1923, the son of George H.E. and Anna (Runge) Rosel in St. Ansgar. He attended St. Ansgar and Mossville Schools. On September 29, 1942, he married Marla McPhail in Osage. He served with the U.S. Navy aboard USS Remey DD688 in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. George farmed for forty years and then worked as a mechanic at Webbs Transmission, retiring in 1985.

George was a member of Hanford American Legion Post No. 5.

George was a great patriot and countryman. He was a master gardener; his garden was the pride of Bertram. He loved to fix things and was an avid reader. George was a quiet man who taught by example, he enjoyed time spent with family, especially his grandchildren. He was loved and respected by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
