George Joseph Peters Sr.
June 20, 1931 — August 23, 2015
George Joseph Peters Sr., 84, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died on Sunday, August 23, 2015, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids. Services: 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2015, at Hillside Wesleyan Church, Cedar Rapids. Family will greet friends an hour prior to service time. Burial: 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, at Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma, Iowa, with military rites.
Survivors include his wife, Vera of Cedar Rapids; children, Ramona Gayle (Fred) Darrah of Palo, Iowa, Stephanie Lynn Peters of Cedar Rapids, G. Joe (Beth) Peters Jr. of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and Pastor “Ray” Ralph Raynor (Heidi) Peters of Minden, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, Brian, Greg, Angelina, Georgina, Sarah, Kristin, Robbie, Anna, Josiah, Rachel, Caleb and C.J.; seven great-grandchildren; cousins, Beverly, Dean and Stanley; many nieces and nephews; extended family in North Carolina; and many other close friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant brother, Gerald Peters; grandsons, Sergio Espinal-Paz and Samuel Peters; and a great-grandson, Marcos Capetillo.
George was born on June 20, 1931, in Montezuma, Iowa, son of Ralph and Margaret (Ammann) Peters. He attended Jackson Township country school and graduated from Montezuma High School in 1948. George helped on the family farm, then entered into the United States Marine Corps from 1952-1954 during the Korean War where he was assigned to the DMZ at the 38th Parallel. He found the love of his life Vera Raynor in Jacksonville, North Carolina and they married August 11, 1954. Upon discharge the couple returned to helping on the family farm, later moving to Cedar Rapids in 1963. George worked as the parts manager for Schwitters for 3 years. He later worked for the United States Post Office as a letter carrier for 30 years retiring in 1996. George was a member of the American Legion and VFW 788 in Cedar Rapids and a 60 year member of the Hillside Wesleyan Church. He was a courtesy driver for Junge and McGrath Auto dealerships and also for Meals on Wheels. George loved playing in the garden, yard work, watching NASCAR, helping and attending his children and grandchildren’s events. He was a handy man, bowled for many years and enjoyed playing horseshoes.
