George U. Mullis

George U. Mullis, 99, a resident of Monticello Nursing and Rehab Center, formerly of Central City, passed away surrounded by his families on Sunday, December 30, 2012. Funeral Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2013, at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Central City. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Central City where a scripture service will begin at 3:30 p.m. Burial: St. Mary’s Cemetery in Manchester.
Survivors include his wife, Rose; seven children, Leon (Betty) Mullis of Waterloo, Nancy Heaverlo (Earl Iben) of Cedar Rapids, Dorothy (Loras) Steffen of Drakesville, Ruth (Kenneth) Myers of Dubuque, Lester “Butch” (Jo) Mullis of Prineville, Oregon, Roger (Rita) Mullis of Manchester and Carla (Jeff) Peterson of Chattanooga, Tennessee; a step-daughter, JoAnn (Norman) Mathis of Marion; sister-in-law, Norma Fortmann; brothers-in-law, Monroe (Ardella) Hoffmann and Wesley (Anna May) Petrick; 31 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Hazel; an infant daughter; five grandchildren; four brothers; and four sisters.
George was born July 29, 1913, the son of John and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Mullis in Uniontown, Indiana. He married Hazel Hoffmann on October 7, 1937, in Dyersville. She died May 30, 1982. George married Rose (Petrick) McEvoy on October 28, 1989, in Coggon.
George came to Iowa in 1935 and worked as a farmhand. He purchased his own farm in 1949 near Masonville, where he farmed until 1965. He moved to Manchester where he worked several factory jobs until he retired. After retirement George spent many enjoyable hours working on projects of wood crafting and rug making. He loved bird watching, especially his martins. George loved dancing and was an avid card player, especially pinochle.
George was much loved by his large family. The family wishes to thank the staff of Monticello Nursing and Rehab Center and “Above and Beyond” Hospice for his wonderful care.
