George J. Matias, 84, of 3812 Foxborough Terrace N.E., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Saturday, November 10, 2007, in St. Luke’s Hospital, in Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Funeral Mass: 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 14, 2007, at All Saints Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by Father Gerald Condon. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, November 13, 2007, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids. A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Burial: St. John’s Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, with military honors.
George is survived by his four children, Ron (Teresa) Matias of Monrovia, Indiana, Mary Kay (Lynn) Willett of Zanesville, Ohio, John (Barb) Matias of Cedar Rapids and Mark (Lisa) Matias also of Cedar Rapids. Other survivors include sisters-in-law, Darlene (Pete) Kanellis and Noel (Richard) Tyson; three nieces; three nephews; ten grandchildren; one great grandchild; and a special friend, Helen.
He was preceded in death by Connie, his wife of 55 years; his parents; brother, Bill; sister, Mary; and two grandchildren.
George was born March 11, 1923, to John and Josephine Matias. As a child, he worked at his parent’s grocery store in Cedar Rapids. On May 21, 1946, he was united in marriage to Mary Kathleen “Connie” Convey in Cedar Rapids.
George served the city of Cedar Rapids as a member of the Police Department from 1947 until his retirement in 1973, spending the latter 12 years as Chief of Police. After retiring from the Police Department, George worked at People’s Bank and Trust Co. in Cedar Rapids for several years.
As Chief of Police, he was a charter member of the Iowa Law Enforcement Council, Iowa Crime Commission and the Confidential Records Council. George was also a member, and past president of the Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and Peace Officers, Iowa State Policemen’s Association and the Cedar Rapids Policemen’s Protective Association.
He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Hanford Post #5. George was also a longstanding member of All Saints Catholic Church.
George was very proud of his children and grandchildren and he will be greatly missed.
Military honors will be provided by the Cedar Rapids Police Department honor guard.
